Thank goodness, I picked the smallest room in the house to use this color of red in because it took 4 coats! I honestly thought it would never turn out. This is a 1/2 bath for guests to use. We will have a white chair rail between the colors.
This is a view of the dining room from the kitchen. There will also be a white chair rail in here. The top has a gold metallic glaze over it. It's the first time I've ever done a faux painting technique and I was very nervous but am really pleased with how it turned out. I'll have to try another picture with the lights off since they reflect off it.
This is the dining room from the foyer. I'm just in love with the lights.
That's the conclusion of the upstairs being painted. I've finished Jace's room downstairs and am about to start on the den.
Finished Hunger by Michael Grant (the sequel to Gone).
This is more of the same (kids surviving in a world without parents) but there are more bad things thrown in in this one. (No, I'm not getting more specific; if you're curious, read them.) :)
I think I prefer Susan Beth Pfeffer's books, but these are good, too.
On Saturday me and my two good friends are headed to Chicago for a "Girl's Weekend". I have never done this before and I'm beyond excited!
My friends are talking about visiting all of the usual places - H&M, Sears Tower, Navy Pier etc. Me? I'm excited about the food. Yup, that's right - brunch in particular. I'm looking forward to sleeping in a bit on Sunday morning, getting up and getting only myself dressed, enjoying the fact that there are no diapers to be changed and heading out to a delicious Sunday Brunch. I will savor that meal for a long time. I'm so excited thinking about it now.
Of course, I'm excited to see all the other sights and shopping and just being with my friends. But brunch...yummy brunch! I can't wait to see you too!
All those who have been to Chicago (since I haven't) do you have any good restaurant suggestions for me? (I'm definitely talking to you, Hannahbanana!)
"Back in 1775, my Marine Corps came alive..." Yes, 234 Years and still going. I've been a civilian since 2000, but I still remember the cadences, the PT (physical training), the history, and every year I still celebrate my other birthday. The Marine Corps birthday. From what was started back in Philadelphia, PA at Tun Tavern is what we know today as the United States Marine Corps. Every year, Marines celebrate where ever they may be stationed, with a birthday message and ceremony of the cutting of the cake for the youngest and oldest Marine. I still have my dress blues too, they're hanging in my closet. The rest of my uniforms are in my sea bag under my staircase, no way can or will I part with them.
- We are United States Marines, and for two and a quarter centuries we have defined the standards of courage, esprit, and military prowess. [Gen. James L. Jones, USMC (CMC); 10 November 2000]
- I love the Corps for those intangible possessions that cannot be issued: pride, honor, integrity, and being able to carry on the traditions for generations of warriors past. [Cpl. Jeff Sornig, USMC; in Navy Times, November 1994]
I remember the day I enlisted, the nervousness as I left home to the airport, boarding the plane for San Diego and arriving at the MCRD (Marine Corps Recruit Depot). It wasn't until I stood on those yellow footsteps that I was no longer an individual, but about to be apart of something bigger and become apart of the history and carry it with me. I still remember "reveille", the shock of getting out of bed by the Drill Instructors (all before the sun was out), learning about discipline (the hard way), it was tradition. From sunrise until sunset we were training (drill, lecture, PT, drill, lecture, PT, ect...), and yes some IT was thrown in there as well. It was about breaking down the "individual" and rebuilding from there to be apart of a team, a unit, the Corps.
I miss it at times, but it's apart of me, I'm thankful I took that journey. I'm proud to have served in the Corps, so many memories from my time enlisted. I always stand "taller" or sit "higher" in my seat (while driving) anytime I see the Marine Corps flag posted or carried about.
Happy Birthday Marines...

...watching my students work on their final group projects, I heard a loud sort of bang just outside our building. As a teacher on a largish campus, I now find myself worrying about school violence. I actually sat there and planned our classroom emergency procedure should a gunman ever enter our building. It included the shutting of doors, the turning off of lights, the straightening of desks, and the quick movement of students against walls hidden from view of the little window in the door.
Are you prepared in case of a natural disaster? What do your plan and preparations include?
oh crap no...
yes, i live in Florida, it's the Lightening capitol of the US. We also regularly have hurricanes.
I don't even have one working flashlight. No extra food....nothing...
But lucky for me hurricane season is pretty much almost over, some rain from Ida and then the dry season will come on full force.
Some new things have come to light in regards to the Nook.
A) You can only lend a book once - IN THE LIFETIME OF THE BOOK. Not
only that, but not all books are lendable, it's up to the publisher.
B) You can't use B&N giftcards to purchase eBooks, because they have
to be associated with a credit card. That means I can't be gifted
during the holidays.
C) I already knew this, but it's coming back repeatedly to bite me in
the ass. Kindle has MUCH better prices on eBooks - period. They also
have more. I'm sure that B&N will eventually catch up, but until then
I'm screwed.
But...but... the Kindle is UGLY. Watching the videos of it doesn't
make me want to use it at all but when I watch the videos of the Nook
I do. So, do I pay more for the books now and limit myself to
selection because the device is better - and HOPE that B&N catches up
- or do I go with the Kindle and hope that the Kindle catches up in
regards to hardware?!
Oh, and I found out that the Nook is selling out like hotcakes,
they've already pushed the preorders (well, if you preorder now - mine
hasn't been pushed back) to the second week in December from the last
week in November. Maybe I can sell it via eBay and get all my money
back and then some?
