Fall/Winter Leaves

Crazy! Really Crazy!

The temperature change has got us bundling up in thermals, but the red and orange leaves are actually quite beautiful. and the lake is actually pretty quiet. I'm really quite amazed with my camera phone too. It took really good pictures, so I took random photographs of everything at the park yesterday.

The sun wasn't even peeking at all and I could feel the cold in my hands. So after taking the last photograph of the sun peeking through the trees (I was really excited that the rays showed up), I curled up in the bed of the truck with a blanket and large back pillow and read.

After a nice long day at the park, I went home with the intent of baking and trying out a new recipe. Instead of making chocolate chip cookies, I wanted to substitute the chocolate chips with peppermint bark. The first batches came out right, but then the next batch really sucked. It stuck to the pan and the dozen and half went straight to the ice cream topping jar I have. The next batch, I sprayed my sheets with PAM, so the melted peppermint won't stick. It worked, but I think instead of using peppermint bark, I'll use Andes mints the next time.

Homemade Lava Cake

It's winter! It's cold! I love this weather. As many of you know, I grew up in cold weather and the warm and sweltering weather in the California Valley where our temperatures reach three digits Farenheit, I am ecstatic the winter season here arrived. It's time to take out my sweaters, jackets, scarves, hats, gloves, etc! I'm in my element.

So, with the winter season being here, I'm itching to bake. Last week, Mike wanted me to make the lava cake. But after looking at my recipe book, I found that making the inside of the center of the lava cake takes a while since the melted chocolate must cool for at least two hours! Needless to say, he was disappointed and I was more disappointed because I wanted to make it.

But today was a different story. I knew how long it was going to take so I started making the filling for the cake at 3:00 PM. Yes, I gave myself some time. I washed all my ramekins, took out my heavy duty mixer, and started prepping for the next step.

The filling didn't take that long to make. Maybe 10 minutes tops on a double broiler. The cake itself didn't take that long either.. about 20 minutes tops.

As I poured the batter into the ramekins, I could see Mike salivating in the dining room. He couldn't wait and after the crap we had to go through with Sport Chalet, this was a welcomed treat!

I'm a pretty happy person, now that the cake's done! It was so good. Mike added vanilla ice cream to his and I ate mine with soy milk!

Finished Under the Dome by Stephen King.

This is definitely my least favorite of his epics (in order: It, The Stand, then this), but it's still pretty good.

The town of Chester Mills (in Maine, but I bet you could've guessed that) is basically your average small town--until a dome is dropped on it. Nobody knows why (our government doing an experiment? terrorism? aliens?) but why doesn't really matter when you're under a dome and completely cut off from the outside world.

As if the dome isn't bad enough, there are some less than savory people in the town (notably the second selectman Big Jim Rennie and his son, Junior).

It's a long book, and it covers a week in the life of the town. (The dome is dropped a couple pages in.)

It took me a while to get into this book (about 500 pages, or half the book) but I finished the other half of the book in about 24 hours.

Connections to other King stories: Not really. Castle Rock is mentioned, but that's about it. (There's also a character named Myra Evans, but it's not the same one from Needful Things.)

Movie version: No (not yet?).

carson palmer is due for another knee injury

I had been kicking myself for not trying to extend my stay in the Emerald City through the weekend, but I guess things have a way of working out for the best whether we realize it or not. M-----l headed west the day after I came home, and he and Homebody spent the morning watching my team play his team. I could have been there watching with them. It's best that I wasn't. There are worse fan bases in sports, but no fans are worse than Bengal fans when it comes to keeping a little bit of success in proper perspective. I still remember vividly the bitching and moaning on the part of Bengal fans when the Steelers shredded them (and Carson Palmer's knee) on the way to Super Bowl XL. You'd have thought the league promised them a championship or something, the way they cried about "being robbed." And I have no doubt that everyone in southwest Ohio believes after today that they are owed a Super Bowl victory. After two flukey losses, I kind of hope we face the Bungles a third time in the playoffs. I look forward to seeing them (and, hopefully, Carson Palmer's knee) shredded by the Steelers once again on their - the Steelers' - way to a seventh Lombardi Trophy.

Who dey? Dey ain't nuthin', that's who dey.

A little torn, still

I've been looking at purchasing yet another guitar, a couple months ago, I gave my Ibanez to my friend Michelle's son. He's interested in learning guitar and I never play on that Ibanez, I'm all about my SG. Anyway, I'm looking at two different Gibson guitars.

First there's the Gibson Explorer:

Tane says the SG Diablo because it is pretty, it does have a unique look about it. Hell, I love the SG. I'd be crazy to say otherwise. But something about the Explorer, to me it just says "metal". The SG is slighly more expensive, but you see where the money went just by looking at it.

We'll see...

Bud and Pep 001

After church this morning I asked Mr P if he would go to the store and buy three steaks so we could invite mom over for lunch too. While he was at the store I got the baked potatoes and broccoli ready and mom started the charcoal grill. When Mr P returned home with the steaks I unwrapped them and found four beautiful T-bones. I laid out three steaks so I could season them and wrapped one up to save for the next day. Mr P came by and asked where the other steak went, I said I was saving it. He said I was to cook it too because he had bought it for Peppy and Buddy to share. I guess dogs really are a man's best friend!
