I totally agree with you. This is a wonderful book. Have you seen the A&E movie version? It's also excellent. Definitely check it out if you aren't too "Thomas Hardy'd" out.
Oops...I totally missed the part at the end of your synopsis where you mentioned the mini-series.
I'm in the process of reading this right now. I'm prepping to take the MA exam (Literature) in December and Hardy's Tess is one of many on the list I hadn't yet read....I'll post something when I finish - so far, I'd agree completely with your sentiments.

This is one of my all time favorite novels. I'd give it a 9 out of 10, too.

Hi, we have Tess of the D'Urbervilles on TV at the moment in England. It is very good, well acted, a story well told, but I hate it. Or at least all the lies and deception - and rape! let's not forget that - Tess suffers from.

Why did Hardy make his main

Sorry my question was cut off half way! It was why does Hardy make his main character Tess and in other books too suffer so much pain, lies, deception and ! rape?

when i started to read this book,my mind totally went to some situations in 'The return of the native'. i suppose Hardy
