- I was opening a can of cream of celery soup on Sunday and sliced the absolute hell out of my pinkie. Went-to-the-hospital sort of slice. Almost fainted sort of slice. Bloooood sort of slice.
- Barf.
- Would have thought it would have been a knife that would have done me in. But no, apparently I cannot work a can.
- I knew I couldn't be trusted in the kitchen.
- No stitches for the cut. Mostly because I didn't want to wait around in an emergency room full of the swine flu for three hours.
- The cut is healing better than I would have guessed, though. It's only moderately gross now.
- Because I cut my hand, I had to get a tetanus shot.
- The shot didn't hurt. But GOODNESS GRACIOUS, my whole arm is killing me now! It feels like someone is trying to yank my arm from my body. Pain pain pain!
- I am SUCH a wimp. And a complainer.
- I'm stopping now.
- I have been writing about my New Zealand trip, so I'll hopefully get that posted soon. Needless to say, I had an incredible time! Amazing! Phenomenal! If you'd like to see one of the many, many, many photos, visit my flickr.
- I want to go back! There was so much that I didn't get to see!
- I'm reading this really great book right now called Angry Conversations with God. It's so good!
- I miss Amy (my coworker) -- she's in Denmark. Work is just not the same without her happy face around.
- We are apparently world travelers around my office.
- Remember back when we complained because Thanksgiving was barely over and Christmas decorations started going up? Yeah, there's already trees and santas and candy canes EVERYWHERE.
- I had other things to hodgepodge, but the Motrin has made me all la-di-da.
- La-di-da.
- I really do miss blogging. I consistently write posts in my head that are not book reviews but I never seem to find the time to write them down.
- I have been ridiculously busy lately.
- I go to New Zealand in ten days.
- My roommate got married this last weekend. Even though our two bedrooms are separated by an entire floor, I can totally tell that the house is empty.
- Her wedding was so her. It was lovely and I'm very happy for her and wish her and her husband all the blessings in the world as they start their new life together!
- Praise Jesus, wedding season is over for me.
- I'm taking this financial class and it's kind of scary to realize where my money is going. Life is expensive. Well, car insurance is expensive, at least. And wedding gifts.
- I go to New Zealand in ten days.
- Tomorrow I go to the Giant Corn Maze.
- It's finally starting to feel like fall around here. For the first time in what feels like months, it's hovering just below 80.
- Yes, just below 80 is fall here.
- I'm back into running. Up to a little over two miles right now and it feels really good. A friend seems to think I could do a half-marathon in January.
- *bursts out laughing*
- Oooh! It's Franka Potente on House!
- I go to New Zealand in ten days.
- On Wednesday night, my friend Jen and I went to our friend Carolyn's house to purchase plane tickets to New Zealand. It took us forever to enter all of our information -- passport numbers, frequent flyer member numbers, meal preferences, etc. etc. etc. After all that, the Air New Zealand website would tell us "Booking Service Not Availble." Bah! We wanted our tickets.
- After trying again at my house and again at work, I ended up on the phone with tech support at Air New Zealand. We finally determined that something was happening in one of the many servers between here and NZ, so he went ahead and booked my tickets for me. And then we chatted about New Zealand -- what to pack, how -- unlike Australia -- there really isn't any wildlife that is out to kill me, where to go, ferry information, etc. My parents told me that NZ has the nicest people. I'm beginning to believe it!
- We're flying into Auckland on a Sunday (leaving on a Friday -- that International Date Line is crazy). We'll spend a day there and then fly down to the south part of the south island, to Dunedin. From Dunedin, we'll rent a car, quickly instruct ourselves on how to drive on the left side of the road, and work our way up the east coast, through Christchurch and all the way up to Abel Tasman, a national park. We'll take the ferry from Picton to Wellington, spend a day there, and come home. It will be a crammed trip, but we'll see a lot.
- Some of our plans include: hot air ballooning, kayaking, seeing one or more filming locations of the Lord of the Rings, hiking, taking a gondola in Christchurch, sightseeing, eating, Maori culture viewing, going to beaches, seeing the Time Ball, biking, and doing whatever else strikes our fancy.
- This is one of the main reasons I've started running again. I want to be in good shape so I don't wear myself out!
- Tomorrow I am taking a women's self-defense course. HI-YAH!
- Part of me wants to start taking karate lessons again, but that part of me doesn't realize I have exactly zero hours of free time these days.
- Be prepared for a bunch of book reviews -- I'm behind and I'm looking to catch up this weekend.
- You know how I know that God loves me? It's FRIDAY.
- My brother turned 25 this past weekend. Here are some shots from The Silver Anniversary Of His Birth (that's why (most) everyone is wearing silver and gray. Chris is wearing his Old Man Sweater and a shirt with a Winnebago on it.).
- I did a strength training class at the gym on Saturday, and I finally woke up without being sore today.
- Which means I haven't run since Friday.
- Which means that my run tonight will probably hurt more than normal.
- After my run, though, is book club! We're talking about the Welsh Girl and I'm really looking forward to it.
- Drinking only water for Lent isn't that hard. Except that I'm going to a wedding and spending time with my friend Hillary in Santa Fe next weekend, and I'd like to have a glass of champagne at the wedding or a cup of coffee while visiting with my friend. I'm praying to see what God has to say about this.
- I can't wait to see Hillary (we went to grad school together in Boston -- she now resides in Chicago.
- Here is a picture of Hillary since I only ever posted a photo of her that makes it seem like she only has one arm.
- My short-term memory is not being nice lately. I can't seem to remember anything at work. I'm forgetting stuff left and right. And it's really bothering me because normally I'm fairly on top of things.
- My mom gave me a bunch of Harry and David pears and I can't eat them fast enough. I was going to make java janie's pear crumble, but I haven't been home and I'm not going to be home...so I'm wolfing them down before they go bad.
- It's going to be 80 this weekend. Whee!
- I haven't eaten meat (other than seafood) in two weeks. I feel fabulous.
- Tomorrow night I am going to dinner with my brother and Amy. Amy and I have a $25 gift certificate to Thai food (when you buy $35 of Thai food) plus a buy-one-get-one-free coupon. That is a LOT of Thai food.
- Friday I am going to dinner with Marissa, who I love. A lot.
- Saturday I am fasting with a friend for the morning and the afternoon (we're going to spend some time outside, praying and refocusing), and then it's my friend Nolan's birthday party.
- Sunday I have no plans, other than church. It's a miracle!
- I hate when Citi's website goes down and won't let me pay my mortgage. HELLO! I'm trying to give a failing bank some money and I can't do it!
- Friday night I made some delicious chicken. Cubed it and sauteed with dijon mustard, lemon juice, and garlic. Yumtastic.
- Saturday morning I met with an amazing woman who is building a home for girls who have been rescued from forced prostitution in Sacramento. I'm going to be helping with editing and web stuff. I'm so thrilled to be a part of this mission! (www.couragetobeyou.com)
- Saturday night I had seventeen of my closest friends over for a game night. It was a stupendous amount of fun. And now I have a stupendous amount of leftovers! I saw people I haven't seen in months! It was great.
- We're starting a nearly year-long sermon series on Revelation at my church. I really like rock star ninja Jesus of Revelation.
- Played Battle of the Sexes last night with some of my roommate's friends. The girls won. Obviously.
- Tomorrow night I have Bible study. I really like the people and and have been enjoying my Tuesday nights thoroughly. Making new friends is always fun.
- Wednesday is my roommate's birthday, so we're going to have a girls' night at one of her other friend's houses. Another night of fun!
- On Thursday, I've been asked to be interviewed for a short segment on saving money on the local news. It will be about using www.bookins.com to trade books. If it works out, they are coming to interview me in my library at my house! Scary and exciting! I hope I don't sound like a tool.
- I am getting my hair cut tonight so at least I look nice for TV.
- Friday night I have a New Book Club Planning Meeting with some people from the aformentioned Bible study. And there will be pizza. Pizza and books. Joy!
- On Saturday, I plan to breathe.
- I was going to get rid of my gym membership, but decided to really make an effort to plan out my week so that I can go to the gym at least three times. Having crazy weeks like the one listed above is NOT HELPING THE PLAN.
- I want a Diet Pepsi.
- I'm eating York peppermint patties to compensate.
- It's only kind of working. Diet Pepsi has no calories. Yorks do. Bah.
- I need more time to go to the gym to work of the Yorks.
- It's noon. Back to the grindstone.
- I feel like one of those people who drive me crazy -- I want my new car, and I want it NOW. Gimme gimme gimme!
- I hate people like that. *makes a concerted effort to think about other things*
- My rental car smells like it might have been recently hotboxed and then doused with rancid air freshener.
- My rental car is a Jetta. I feel like that might be ironic in some way, but I'm not sure how.
- Anyone want to buy at 2003 Jetta that...needs a little TLC?
- I hope my new car doesn't smell. I mean, it is coming from Fresno...
- Tax season is no long EZ once you buy a home. I need my 1040, my Schedule A, my Schedule B, my Schedule D, my 5405, not to mention the state versions of all of these forms. I think that's all but could be wrong. I was going to try and do it myself (with Dad's help) to save money, but I'm thinking $29.95 sounds like a bargain to get all of this done without a headache.
- Despite all the headaches, I think I'll be getting a hefty refund because I had so much tax-deductable mortgage interest last year. That's going toward the car.
- Plus a new home buyer tax "credit" (what amounts to an interest-free 15-year loan) for $7500. That's going toward the car.
- Combine that with some savings and the $14 trade-in value on my paperweight, er, Jetta, and I'll own my car outright. JOY FOR NO CAR PAYMENT.
- My insurance is going up, though. Mostly because running over that STUPID STICK is now a point on my driving record. Grumblecakes.
- I'm still a little coughy from the cold I had last week. It comes in fits and starts. It's totally hot.
- It's lovely and rainy here. I know a lot of people don't like the rain, but I love it. It makes everything so green and clean and my allergies don't bother me at all. I'm one of those people who could be happy in Seattle.
- I discovered www.mint.com and I really like the concept...it would actually be useful if I could get my bank account to link to it.
- Lost was excellent, as per usual, last night. Totally knew that that certain someone would be in that certain cave.
- Some work just came in. Guess I should do that.
- That is all.
- My book club has selected You Can't Go Home Again by Thomas Wolfe as its January selection. Seriously, book club? Seriously? The thing is 700+ pages! I think this should count double toward my 2009 Reading Challenge, don't you think? Just kidding. (Sort of.)
- I joined a gym. I just can't get my butt outside in the cold (and I'm in California! It's not even cold by most people's standards) to run, so I found a pretty good deal at my local gym. It's month-to-month with no contracts, no sign-up fee, and it's $15 less a month than normal. Thought I'd give it a shot at least until it warms up and I can get back outside, running and playing tennis.
- The guy who signed me up for the gym (at the Sacramento Home and Garden Show of all places) lives in my condo community. I don't know my neighbors. That makes me sad. Part of me wants to organize a neighborhood potluck. But I'm scared.
- I just cleaned out my purse and found nine post-its with various cryptic notes, such as:
- Bryan Young UP278 IZ - Alone in IZ world
- 4210 1/3 VIO 4152 1/5 RED
- Get wet densities Mike F&F
- Karrie #08434463 IVRII330846 TY/RJ 36" --> 19"
- Call Georgia re: cabs ask Hoge?
- Same height finish pulls latteral width? 45"
- Press check 9:30 1099 forms w/ envels, ask Nash re: lights
- In an effort to be more socially aware and to focus less on myself and more on those who suffer, I'd like to find a list of companies that ignore human rights violations (I know that Coca-Cola, Nestle, and others have overlooked sweatshop conditions and other violations) so I can make sure I am spending my money responsibly with other non-offending companies. Does anyone know of such a list? I can't seem to find one.
- I'm going to Texas at the end of the month to visit Jen. Jealous, aren't you?
