...the entire year. But I guess since it's (nearly) Thanksgiving, we can make a special effort. :)
Tomorrow morning I'm getting up early to participate in the Sacramento Food Closet's Run to Feed the Hungry. The 5K/10K run is, as far as I know, the largest Thanksgiving-day run in the nation. Last year, 23,000 people participated and raised over $600,000 for the Food Closet. Today I picked up my bib and shirt and little orange electronic tag. The line was out the door to register! This is the 15th annual run, but it will be my first. And I am going to attempt to run the whole 5K with my friend Jessy. Eeek.
I'm only two weeks short of finishing my Couch-to-5K training, so I'm hoping that I can push myself all 3.125 miles. We'll have to see. I'm a better runner in the evening, but I think the adrenaline will be pumping tomorrow since I'll be surrounded by thousands of other people, all running so that the less fortunate in our community can put food on the table. We'll see if I can pull out all the stops and get my legs/lungs to run 5K.
After the run (and a shower), I'm going out to my parents' house, where my mother, Cook Extraordinaire, is making ham, stuffing, roasted potatoes, green bean casserole, Brussels sprouts, candied yams, cranberry sauce, crescent rolls, and the world's best dessert, rum-soaked pears on a nest of filo dough with vanilla bean ice cream on top. And my grandma is bringing her famous shredded-carrots-and-pineapple-in-orange-jello. This is, by far, my favorite meal of the year. And after the run, I know I'll be hungry! It's just going to be me, my parents, my brother and his fiance, and my grandma. But I love all these people and are thankful they are in my life.
Here's to sweets, and joy, and joyness as we all kick off this holiday season!
Yes, I know it's sacrilegious for most people, but we don't eat turkey on Thanksgiving. We like ham better. So that's what we eat.
There were only five of us at Thanksgiving this year (not complaining) -- Mom, Dad, Brotherface, and Grandma. My mom made a delicious spread of ham, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, stuffing (obviously not stuffed inside the ham), yams (which I don't eat because they are gross), cranberry sauce, crescent rolls, and Grandma's carrot and pineapple orange jell-o. And wine. It was all very good.
I've also decided that I love the holidays not for reasons that most people love the holidays (family, good will, cheer, etc.), although those things are good. I love the holidays because I get to do puzzles. My mom always breaks out a new puzzle at Thanksgiving and Christmas, and I swear I can sit there all day, digesting the enormous meal, putting together a puzzle. Today, my brother and I did this puzzle:
It was a tough one, but fun. Not the worst ever ("Hay in a Needlestack," I'm talking to you), but a good challenge.
Hope you all enjoyed your turkeys, or whatever you ate today!
